Bromine is a heavy, corrosive red-brown liquid with a strong unpleasant odor. Poisonous. Bromine was discovered in 1826 by the French chemist A. Zh. Balard in the study of brines from the Mediterranean salt fields; named from the Greek. bromos - stench. Bromine is widely distributed in nature and is found almost everywhere in a dispersed state. Almost all bromine compounds are water-soluble and therefore readily leach out of rocks. It is present as an impurity in hundreds of minerals.
