Erbium is a soft malleable silver metal. Erbium was first isolated in 1843 by the Swedish chemist C.G. Mosander, from a mineral found near the village of Ytterby.
Along with three more chemical elements (terbium, ytterbium, yttrium) it was named after the village of Ytterby, located on the island of Resare, part of the Stockholm archipelago.
